"I registered with the site after starting a new job in Bristol, which meant joining the dreaded bottleneck of commuters travelling from Weston-super-Mare every day. I pretty much forgot about it until Danny sent a message…. We've been car sharing for about a month now and it works well, I don't have to go out of my way at all and we can sail past everyone else on the ‘HOV’ lane section of the long Ashton Bypass! My petrol costs are much reduced, and I guess we're saving the Earth a bit too!"

Travel Plans

Car-sharing is just one travel mode that can be promoted as part of a company or organisation’s travel plan.

What is a Travel Plan?

A Travel Plan is simply a long-term management strategy for a site, employer or organisation that aims to reduce car-use by improving and encouraging the alternatives to driving alone. A Travel Plan also seeks to address the needs of those who do not have a choice to drive. Successful travel plans can reduce single-occupancy car use by 10 to 30% and can cover commuter journeys, business travel, visitor travel and incoming goods and services.

Preparation of a Travel Plan

A Travel Plan is a dynamic process that will grow and develop with time and in accordance with the changing circumstances of your organisation and the environment in which it works. It is not a one-off event to be undertaken and completed, nor is it a document to be produced and put on a shelf. It is the start of a new and better way of living and working, a process of evolution not revolution. It is a continuous improvement process for all the travel-related activities of an organisation and its employees.

There are lots of good reasons to develop a Travel Plan, including:

  • Solving problems caused by demand for parking
  • Aiding the recruitment and retainment of staff
  • Reducing traffic congestion and pollution
  • Reducing an organisation's carbon footprint
  • Improving the health of staff
  • Keeping ahead of planning requirements (travel plans are required for all new major developments)
  • Meeting demand for corporate responsibility (including supporting ISO 14001 accreditation)
  • Reducing employees' commuting costs
  • Networking with over 150 other employers in the West of England who have developed a Travel Plan!

What help is available?

All four West of England authorities actively promote Travel Plans and offer support to employers and organisations developing them. There is also a West of England Travel Plan Awards Scheme to reward your efforts! Please refer to contacts below:
